Where this word comes from
From Ottoman Turkish بیرام (bayram), from Proto-Turkic *badram (“feast”). Nişanyan and Clauson suggests a borrowing from Iranian source, In his work Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk, Kashgari states that he did not know the meaning of the word but had heard it from the Persians, and that the Oghuz Turks used this word to mean "joy".https://www.tdk.gov.tr/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Osman-F.-Sertkaya-_-%E2%80%9CBAYRAM%E2%80%9D-KEL%C4%B0MES%C4%B0-%C3%9CZER%C4%B0NE-_-9.pdf See the reconstruction page for more. Alternatively, related to Proto-Mongolic *bayar (“joy”), whence also Mongolian баяр (bajar). Cognate with Tatar бәйрәм (bäyräm), Kazakh мейрам (meyram), Kyrgyz майрам (mayram), Khakas пайрам (payram), Bashkir байрам (bayram), Azerbaijani bayram, etc.
