Meaning & usage

noun/koˈnu/
  1. topic, subject, issue

Where this word comes from

From kon- (“to be put down”) + -u (deverbal nominal suffix), a calque of Arabic مَوْضُوع (mawḍūʕ, “that which is laid down”), itself a calque of Ancient Greek ὑποκείμενον (hupokeímenon, “that which is laid down”). Coined in 1933 from a suggestion by a member of the public in the newspaper Hakimiyet-i Milliye, perhaps from the earlier reduplicative konu komşu.
