From Middle High German krieche, from Old High German *kriehha (attested in kriehboum). Cognate with Middle Dutch crieke (modern kriek), Middle Low German krêke (modern Kreke, Kreike). Further origin uncertain, but predominantly believed to be from Proto-West Germanic *Krēkō (“Greek”). The fruit in question may have been spread along the Danube, but “Greek” might also have been used simply in the sense of “foreign, novel”. The challenge to this etymology lies in the fact that no reference to a “Greek” fruit is found in Medieval Latin (prunum graecum appears only in the 16th c. in Germany). An alternative theory therefore reconstructs West Germanic *kreuku (“crooked or misshapen tree/fruit”), which would be akin to *krukkju (“crutch”).
