Söldner.
mercenary, sellsword
Meaning & usage
mercenary, sellsword
Where this word comes from
From Middle High German soldener, soldenier, soldenære, derived from solt (modern Sold), likely after Medieval Latin soldonerius and Old Italian soldoniere, soldaniere, literally “salaried”, derived from soldo (“sold, salary”), used in the times of feudal militias, referring to hired or enlisted paid private (lowest rank) soldiers, and by extension mercenaries, as opposed to vassals, knights, and free men. Compare Medieval Latin soldarius (“mercenary”), whence English soldier, German Soldat. Cognate to Middle Low German soldenēr (soldenēre); Middle Dutch soldenær, Dutch soldenaar; Old Danish soldner (soldener), Danish soldner (soldæner), Old Swedish soldonær (soldenær, sollenær, soldenar, soldener), Swedish soldenär (soldnär), Yiddish זעלנער (zelner, “soldier”).
