Where this word comes from

18th century, from New Latin Vogesi m pl, from Vogesus, a variant reading of Classical Latin Vosegus, probably from Gaulish. The metathesis apparently originated in medieval copies of the Naturalis historia. Displaced older German Was(i)gen pl (now obsolete) and Wasgau m (now referring to a broader region). The term Wasgenwald m, in common use in Imperial Germany, seems to be a formation of the 19th century (likely after Schwarzwald).
