16th century, expressive intensivation of Late Middle High German spūgen (15th c.), an East Central German variant of spīwen (“to spit”), whence modern speien. Until the earlier 19th century, spucken was considered colloquial, but then established itself as the usual standard word. The above-mentioned form spūgen is a dissimilation of Middle High German spūwen, which comes via the regular Central German development of -iuw- (cf. brauen, kauen) from spiuwen (archaic German speuen), an early alteration of spīwen (possibly after the past participle gespi(u)wen).
