* As a French surname, variant of Lemay (partly due to American pronunciation). * Also as a French surname, from the placename Lamath in Meurthe-et-Moselle. The placename is attested in several forms, as early as Old French la Marz (1178), first element from la, but the second element is uncertain; perhaps a Germanic borrowing (compare Frankish *marisk (“bog, marshy area”)).
