Meaning & usage

noun
  1. An obsolete Russian coin worth three kopeks.

  2. A proposed common currency for the Eurasian Economic Union.

Where this word comes from

Borrowed from Russian алты́н (altýn), either from Tatar алты (altı, “six”), referring to six dengas (six half-kopeks), or from Tatar алтын (altın, “gold”). These small coins were never minted in gold; however, compare the semantic evolution of Latin solidus from a Roman gold coin to a medieval silver shilling.
