From Proto-Finnic *etu. Equivalent to esi- (“front, fore-”) + -u; originally "the area in front of something" (now all but confined to etu-), from which the other senses have developed through figurative use, perhaps already in Proto-Finnic. However, Häkkinen (2004) notes that the abstract senses are only attested since the 18th century.
