Where this word comes from

luo- + -(k) (k-lative singular), from Proto-Finnic *loo-, possibly from Proto-Uralic *luwe (“downstream”). Related to Ingrian looks (~ luokse), Karelian luoh (~ luo) and Veps lon (~ luona). The postpositions with luo- are originally Eastern Finnish; their correspondents in Western Finnish (tykö and terms related to it) were more common in Old Literary Finnish. luo- replaced tykö- in the standard language in the 19th century.
