ø.
The twenty-eighth letter of the Norwegian Bokmål alphabet, written in the Latin script.
Meaning & usage
The twenty-eighth letter of the Norwegian Bokmål alphabet, written in the Latin script.
Where this word comes from
The Norwegian letter continues the medieval Danish–Norwegian letter ⟨ø⟩, ultimately developed from the Latin ligature ⟨œ⟩, formed by joining ⟨o⟩ and ⟨e⟩. In medieval Scandinavian writing, the ligature developed into forms consisting of an ⟨o⟩ crossed by a horizontal, vertical or diagonal stroke. It was used to represent front rounded vowels which had developed in North Germanic, especially through i-umlaut of earlier back rounded vowels. The crossed form became established in Danish and Norwegian as ⟨ø⟩, while Swedish, Icelandic and several other languages developed or adopted the corresponding form ⟨ö⟩. In Norwegian, ⟨ø⟩ is treated as an independent letter rather than as a modified form of ⟨o⟩.
